For the past 25 years or so radiotelemetry collars have been used in wildlife studies to assist biologists in determining animal movement patterns, habitat preference and home ranges. Advancements in radio telemetry technology and availability of powerful PC's in recent years has changed the way researchers look at their location data.
Traditional VHF collars although still commonly used are being replaced particularly in large mammal studies, with Argos satellite-based and most recently GPS collars. It is now possible, with a GPS collar to collect thousands of highly accurate locations for a single animal each year. No longer can data sets be plotted on a topographic map, as it was once done with the first VHF locations. Researchers are now faced with the challenge of finding software to analyze these radio telemetry data sets. Many of the existing home range analysis software packages were simply not designed to meet the needs of the technologies being used in today's wildlife studies.
Range Manager was developed after recognizing the need for easy-to-use home range software, capable of processing large data sets. The developers of Ranger Manager also realized the importance of being able to integrate output such as home range polygons with other data sets using GIS.
