Range Manager
Range Manager software is a home range estimator, designed to put the display and analysis of animal location data back in the hands of the wildlife biologist through an easy-to-use MapInfo Desktop GIS application.

This version of Range Manager has been developed as shareware, without any warrenty expressed or implied, which you are free to use and distribute as long as the original files are unchanged. Although no restrictions have been made on the capabilities of Range Manager , we have added a delay before each action is processed. If you wish to remove this delay you will  have to register your copy and purchase a user license.

        FAQ

For the past 25 years or so radiotelemetry collars have been used in wildlife studies to assist biologists in determining animal movement patterns, habitat preference and home ranges.  Advancements in radio telemetry technology and availability of powerful PC's in recent years has changed the way researchers look at their location data.

Traditional VHF collars although still commonly used are being replaced particularly in large mammal studies, with Argos satellite-based and most recently GPS collars.  It is now possible, with a GPS collar to collect thousands of highly accurate locations for a single animal each year.  No longer can data sets be plotted on a topographic map, as it was once done with the first VHF locations.  Researchers are now faced with the challenge of finding software to analyze these radio telemetry data sets.  Many of the existing home range analysis software packages were simply not designed to meet the needs of the technologies being used in today's wildlife studies.

Range Manager was developed after recognizing the need for easy-to-use home range software, capable of processing large data sets.  The developers of Ranger Manager also realized the importance of being able to integrate output such as home range polygons with other data sets using GIS.

Here are some of Range Manger's features:

      • Range Manger calculates percent Minimum Convex Polygon and Harmonic Mean home ranges.  Area calculations in kilometers or miles are also calculated.
      • Range Manager is an add-on MapInfo application.  This means Range Manager takes full advantage of MapInfo functionality such as:
      • Input locations can be either in projection co-ordinates (i.e. utm) or Latitude/Longitude.
      • Input locations can be displayed and plotted over thematic maps (i.e.. landsat Imagery, forest resource inventory maps)
      • Home range polygons calculated by Range Manager can be imported into any GIS, using MapInfo's export utility.
      • Range Manager has no known maximum number input point limitation.
      • Batch files can be written so home ranges can be calculated at night or over weekend.
      • A line map/table can be created from a sorted point table.  Distance calculations for each line are also calculated.
      • Simulations of animal movement patterns can be performed.
      • SQL statements may be used to query your data.
      • Table Statistics for a point table can be calculated.  Statistics such as nearest neighbour Index, minimum, maximum, average and total distances between points can be calculated.
      • Sort up to 2 table columns in an ascending or descending order.
      • Easy-to-use menu
